I have a buddy that does just this to 'prove' to himself that while he admits to being a life-long 'lush', he can control/stop drinking hard liquor anytime he wants. The main difference being it's between vodka and scotch and when he's 'on the wagon', he drinks beer since it's not hard liquor, ergo doesn't qualify.
Whatever works I guess, I've known him for going on 45 yrs now and he's never been sick or missed a day of work AFAIK and still physically, mentally active in retirement at nearly 68.

You mentioned it sounds perfect--do you mean you have plenty of bass without a subwoofer? That would be nice, finally! Just out of curiosity, have you had a chance yet to compare the old and new crossovers to see which sound better? Once you do that, it might still be worth experimenting with the tuning of the new cabs--you may find you don't have to turn the bass all the way up on the receiver if you change the tuning of the cabs. But the important thing is that it sounds great now so there's no hurry to do anything but enjoy...... Worst case scenario if you experiment with switching crossovers and then cabinet tuning after you've selected which crossovers you prefer and there's no improvement it doesn't matter because you've already got it sounding "perfect"......
No I'm running the 5 inch sub that came with my Magnavox big screen but yes the bass is very crazy awesome good and I'm sure alot of it is coming from the 604's. With the Marantz it was pounding bass even at low levels really filling the room but with the HK it comes on with volume, the louder the more bass but fits together with the rest of the signal much better allowing me to totally crank the sound to beyond tolerating levels and maintain perfect clarity. which coincidentally was exactly what I wanted. ;)
I Think my Nikon camera is not the greatest thing to use to shoot video with.

That clarity that you're mentioning that doesn't break up even at extreme volume levels is what I (and a lot of the folks here) love about vintage Altecs. As I'm sure you know by now, they're known for their realism and clarity. Plus, of course there's nothing wrong with running a sub-woofer for a little extra oomph! I think a little cabinet tuning with the black cabs might make it so you don't need to turn the bass all the way up but if it sounds great right now--like I said if experimenting doesn't help, it doesn't matter-you've already got it sounding great! (so you have nothing to lose, only possible gain)
If you haven't compared crossovers with the new receiver yet, you might be better waiting a little until you've gotten a feel for how the system sounds now anyways. That way if there's only a slight difference in sound quality between the old and new crossovers it will be easier to tell if switching them is an improvement or not if you've had a chance to get used to how your system sounds now for a few hours or even a day or two..... Or you could swap out one crossover and do an A/B comparison....... Oh, yeah, and most importantly--try not to blow the roof off the place!

I'm so happy with it now I doubt if I'll mess with anything, I'm afraid to try the old networks because one had a kinda burnt looking hookup. That's the speaker that needed the Diaphragm replaced and I don't want to risk my speaker just for a test it sounds crazy delicious now. I think I will go with Everybodys suggestion about the adjustable port to tune the cabs after I sit back and enjoy for a while.

Makes sense--those new GPA crossovers probably blow away the old ones anyways--especially if it's sounding that great now with the GPA re-coned drivers and new H.K. receiver. If/when you experiment with the tuning of the cabs please keep us posted as to how you make out and congrats again on your success....

I think as human beings we all have an uncanny ability to rationalize just about anything we see fit. Hey, if it isn't negatively affecting his health or quality of life, more power to him!
Re: 604's are back they sound great.
I broke the HK already...... I was watching the end of Tropic Thunder where Tom Cruise does the dance thing and I had it up to about -10 tried to push it a little more and the whole thing shut down said something about amp protect?? Maybe because I'm running both sets of speaker channels?
Re: 604's are back they sound great.
Probably not broke. Turn OFF, pause..... and turn ON. It should reset. You may need an amp with 4 times the power rating for the load you are driving.
Re: 604's are back they sound great.
I found the problem I had hooked up a pair of small phillips magnavox surround sound speakers to the side 2 speaker terminals long story short, It ate them. I tried turning on both sets and they wouldn't play just the 604's would play so I disconnected them and opened one up....now I know where that smell was coming from. On the backs of the little speakers it said 6 ohm 10 watt. I hooked up one of my old panasonic thrusters to the side 2 terminal and it plays so I know the receiver is fine it just ate the little speakers. :o
Re: 604's are back they sound great.
Nice! So you're having a happy New Years after all. I didn't think you'd be able to clip/fry that receiver driving your speakers. Those duplexes are very efficient and I really don't think you'd even be able to be in the same room with them at anywhere near your amp's full output. My brother has had his HK 3390 for quite a while now and cranks his pretty loud sometimes and has never had a problem. I would recommend you be careful if you hook up a second pair of speakers to the receiver and want to run all 4 speakers at once--be sure your second pair of speakers are efficient (and check their rated power handling capacity). Since you're using a powered sub woofer the subwoofer doesn't use any wattage of course--nice that your receiver has dual subwoofer outputs. You have plenty of power to drive two pair of efficient speakers like your duplexes, but if you have an inefficient pair of speakers hooked up to the receiver you may clip the receiver trying to drive them to an extremely loud volume and that clipping is not good for either pair of speakers (and not particularly good for the amp either). No amp protection circuitry is infallible/perfect. Anyways, just a heads up about running a second pair of speakers.......
